Peppermint Is the Easiest Oil to Fake

Peppermint is everywhere, which is exactly why so little of it is honest.

It is one of the most heavily traded aromatic crops on earth, and the market is full of oil that has been stretched with cornmint, topped up with synthetic menthol, or blended from whatever arrived cheapest that month. Because everyone already knows what peppermint should smell like, a doctored oil sails past most people.

We took the awkward route instead. We buy the crop from the farmers who grow it, we run our own still, and we sell one mint. Nothing arrives here in a drum with somebody else's word attached to it.

Cut, Then Straight to the Still

Mentha piperita is a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint, and it gives up its oil from the leaf and the flowering top together. Both go in.

Our crop is grown in India, where Mentha piperita is farmed at scale specifically for distillation rather than for the fresh-herb trade.

Peppermint is cut as it comes into flower, which is when the leaf carries the most oil and the aroma is at its sweetest rather than its sharpest. Wait too long and the crop turns grassy; cut too early and the yield simply is not there.

The interval between the mower and the still is the part nobody advertises. Cut mint starts losing its lighter aromatics immediately, so the shorter that gap, the more of the top note survives into the bottle.

We distill in-house rather than buying finished oil. That single decision is why we can tell you what went into the charge and what came out of it.

Steam is carried through the packed plant material, the volatile aromatics travel with it, and the oil separates as the vapour cools. It is an old, unglamorous process and there is no shortcut in it worth taking.

Every batch is analysed by an independent third-party laboratory. We do not test our own oil and ask you to take our word for it.

Menthol and menthone

The peppermint signature. The ratio between them separates true Mentha piperita from cornmint dressed up as peppermint.

Synthetic markers

Added menthol crystals and lab-made aroma compounds leave traces. The analysis looks for them specifically.

Peppermint Deserves a Warning Label

We make no medical claims. Peppermint is the most potent oil most people will ever handle, and the honest advice is to use far less than you think you need: one drop where you would use three of something gentler.

Dilute before skin contact and patch test first. Keep it well away from the eyes, and do not apply it near the face of an infant or young child, where concentrated menthol can affect breathing.

If a crop year does not give us oil that matches the profile, we sell out and wait. That has happened, and we would rather post an out-of-stock notice than quietly buy somebody else's mint.
